Cause of fire: Christmas decorations left on by the tenant
The property in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire suffered from a fire in late December 2021. The fire was caused by Christmas decorations on a tree as the family were preparing to enjoy the festive period.
The adjuster who is part of the insurance company left the elderly owners of the property to their own devices to gather quotes and arrange contractors to complete emergency works whilst they did nothing to assist or provide any service.
Oakleafe were appointed a few months after the fire and straightaway arranged for a decontamination specialist to be appointed to look at what mitigation could be achieved at this late stage to protect the property. If not, to look what works would be required to bring the property back to its pre loss condition. Oakleafe were then informed by the decontamination specialist that there could be asbestos within the property. We immediately arranged for a test to be completed and it was confirmed there was asbestos within the property. Plans were then made for the removal of the material within the property.
Oakleafe then put forward the use of a surveyor to be appointed so we can complete the competitive tender process to start reinstatement. After many discussions with the adjuster using our many years of experience and knowledge, the surveyor was appointed and completed the tender process where works commenced.
