As COVID lockdown restrictions began to ease, many shops nationwide were preparing to reopen their businesses. Ms W’s business was no exception to this, as she anticipated the reopening of her gift and jewellery shop. However, in April 2021, whilst two employees were preparing the shop for opening, a vehicle crashed into the front window from the main high street. This caused major structural and interior damage to the shop and destroyed much of the stock. Fortunately, there were no casualties or injuries due to the accident.
Horrified at the impact damage to the shop, and the prospect of a lengthy and difficult fight with her insurers, the owner engaged our Scottish office to manage and present her claim.
We had a lot of challenges to consider when handling the claim.
First and foremost, we had to ensure the property was structurally safe before assessing the building’s claim. We guided our client in engaging suitably qualified engineers and surveyors, dealt with the appointed loss adjuster, and negotiated an agreement for a suitable building contractor.
Navigating some intricacies in how the policy cover was set up, we arranged for the settlement of the claims for stock, fixtures and fittings. At the same time, our financial experts liaised with the client’s accountant to demonstrate her business losses, considering all of the pandemic’s effects.
Upon completing all work, we were delighted to hand back the premises in tip-top condition.
